This week, as part of our learning on ‘Plants’, we have been looking at the life cycle of a sunflower.  We have all had the opportunity to plant our own sunflower seeds (including some we are going to use as an experiment) and we are looking forward to observing them and describing how they grow into mature plants.

Plants and trees are alive like humans and other animals. In order to stay alive, all living things do certain things called life processes.  We have learnt this through the use of the mnemonic ‘MRS GREN’.

M – Benjamin ‘moving’
R – Elaine ‘Respiration’
S – Emilia ‘Sensitivity’
G – Amy ‘Growth’
R – Santino ‘Reproduction’
E – Jessica ‘Excretion’
N – Jack ‘Nutrition’

Plants do these too but in a different way. Plants can move, grow and sense changes in their environment.  They need to take in nutrition and air to survive and they also need to get rid of waste. Plants can reproduce to make new plants and all living things have a life cycle.

Continue with daily reading at home and try to encourage your child to read a variety of different text types.  Remember to practise spellings each week and spend time carrying out weekly homework activities to develop reading comprehension and key skills in maths.

Home Learning

The homework can be linked to any of the above or can be completely the children's own choice, but if you follow the suggested structure given, week by week it should serve as a useful aid.
