Design & Technology (Cooking)

In Design & Technology we have been cooking a variety of foods each week from different countries. The country we have focussed on this week is Germany and we each made a pretzel. Pretzels are a pastry that can be either sweet or savoury. Most of us chose to coat our pretzels in sugar to make them sweet. Making the Pretzel into a knot shape was very tricky as the dough was very soft.

“I really enjoyed cooking this week as we were able to be very creative. We also worked independently most of the time,” described Morgan.

As part of our English lesson we each wrote a Christmas poem. Some of our poems were acrostic, and some of them rhymed. We focussed our poems on Christmas as we are very excited around this time of year. We wrote about trees, presents, lights and food.

“I wrote a rhyming poem about trees, lights and Santa. ‘Sometimes the elves can be a little bit elfie but you will only get one selfie’ was my favourite line,” Madison said excitedly.

Guided Reading

During our guided reading session this week we finished Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. The book was enjoyable as we were discovering what happened to the characters on a small island. We won’t tell you too much though! We are now going to move onto choosing our own books that we can share with the teacher and the rest of the class.

Phonics fun

Here are some exciting words relating to Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens – can you include these in your writing this week?

whisper, small, damp, alone, love, penniless, poor, dreadful, prison, collapsed, weary, second-hand, worthless, unwanted, wailing, unforgiving

Homework is given out weekly on Tuesday and is due in on Monday. In Literacy, the focus this half term is reading comprehension. Maths homework links to in-class learning to allow the children to consolidate their work. Spellings are tested every week on Friday and children can choose whether to learn ‘Core’, ‘Challenge’ or ‘Extension’ words. The children also have weekly times tables practice which should be evident in homework books.
