Welcome to Athena

athena

Welcome to Athena class and Year 4.  This year, you will find Mrs Mehta, a higher level teaching assistant, in Athena Class on Monday and Ms Pallett from Tuesday to Friday.  Mrs Mehta will also be working alongside Ms Pallett each morning. On a Thursday morning, Mrs Townend teaches French and RE.

In Athena, we aim to continue the children's journey into independence and to be increasingly self-motivated.  This year, we will be focusing on our three R's (Respect, Responsibility and Reflection) and these will be interwoven into all we do.  We will also be revisiting our code of conduct.  The children’s mental health and well-being feature high on our priorities with lots of mindfulness, PSHE and children’s voice activities taking place.

In mathematics, we continue the children’s mathematical journey with a greater emphasis on formal methods of calculation alongside developing their problem solving and reasoning.  At the end of year 4, the children will be tested on their knowledge of multiplication facts up to 12x12.  In order to prepare for this, we will use a number of different strategies and supporting materials such as, Times Table Rock Stars, MyMaths and our own Maths Marathon.

In English, we cover a number of different genres in our reading and writing.  We increasingly edit and revise our written work independently, with a focus on developing our spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Our PE sessions are on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Whenever possible, we will do PE outside so the children may wish to have a jumper and tracksuit bottoms/leggings in school.

Spellings will be given out at the beginning of a half term and tested each Friday.  Each child can choose their own level of challenge.

Please can the children make sure that they have their reading books in their bag every day.   Research suggests that there is a positive relationship between reading frequency, reading enjoyment and attainment.  Together, we will endeavour to develop each child’s reading for pleasure.

We are looking forward to working with you this year and sharing all our amazing learning and experiences.

How you can help!

Homework will be handed in on a Tuesday and usually marked and sent back on the Wednesday.

Spellings will be given out at the beginning of a half term and tested each Friday.

Please can the children make sure that they have their reading books in their bag every day. Your child will have an independent reading book closely matched to their independent reading level but they are also able to choose a library book or a free choice book from school or bring in a book from home.
