Welcome to Zeus

Zeus Class

Welcome to Zeus Class. Year 6 is such an important and exciting year for the children which is why I feel privileged to be able to teach in this year group. In Zeus, we aim to continue to develop the children’s independence in preparation for their transition to secondary school whilst also focussing on maintaining their social and emotional wellbeing as they begin their journey into young adulthood. Thanks to brilliant approach to learning they have developed during their time at Hall Meadow, the children tackle the academic challenges they face in their final year at primary school with enthusiasm and resilience. This year’s cohort is already proving themselves to be more than capable of achieving great things.

Our PE sessions are on Thursdays and Fridays. Due to current government advice, wherever possible, PE will be undertaken outside. We therefore recommend children have both inside and outdoor clothing available at all times. The children have been given permission to wear clothing such as leggings, jogging bottoms, jumpers and hooded jackets in the colours of black, grey, white and purple, in order to keep them warm.

Children are not permitted to wear any jewellery during PE sessions. Children will be asked to remove earrings. In the circumstance of fresh piercings, the children will be asked to place tape over their earrings.

It is our expectation that the children will read every day. Whilst we know that lives can be busy, it would be fantastic if you could continue to find time to hear your child read (even if they think they are too grown up to do this!). This will allow you to gain an understanding of their fluency as well as their understanding of the texts that they read. In our experience, the children also love to hear about what we, as adults, are reading, which will in turn help them to share thoughts on their books too.

After half-term (now that the children are settling back into life in school), we will send out reading comprehension homework. The children will self-mark their answers and we can go over errors and misconceptions in class.

The children will be given weekly spellings. These will be assessed through a weekly spelling test.

Rapid recall of number facts is still hugely important in Year 6 which is why we have re-issued the children’s Times Tables Rock Star logins. Please encourage your children to continue to use this resources as times tables allow the children to be successful in many aspects of the Year 6 curriculum such as multiplication, division, shape and space, fractions, ratio and proportion, as well as many others.

Your children are also already completing a weekly arithmetic assessment which they have completed in school. Please encourage your children to reflect on their errors from these assessments and help them to improve by setting new questions based on the ones in the test. We are seeing hugely improved scores in class so thank you for all of your efforts!

Thank you for your continued support.
