Mrs Donald, Mrs Matthes and Mrs Evans would like to welcome back all of the children into Apollo class as they begin their journey in Year 2.

In Maths this week we have been focusing on place value, using practical resources to show how many tens and ones are in a number.

In English, we were very excited to read our lead text ‘The Small Knight’ and look forward to developing this story over the next few weeks.

Our Science topic for the first term is ‘Animals including Humans’ where we get to find out about how humans and other animals are born, grow and change, as well as finding out what we need to survive and be healthy.

Our theme for this term is ‘Landscapes’ where the children will have the opportunity to learn about a range of landscape artists as well as enjoy drawing and painting landscapes of their own.

In RE this term, we will be learning all about ‘Places in Christianity’, identifying what makes a place special for Christian people.  We will learn about the key features of places of worship within Christianity and consider what can be learned from different experiences, beliefs and values.

Our two topics over the next term are ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Toys’, allowing the children to develop their understanding of exploring sounds and beat.

This term, our focus in History/Geography is looking at our local area, identifying how Kettering has changed over the years.  We will also be looking closely at the life of Charles Wicksteed, the founder of Wicksteed Park.

Mr Palmer is very excited to be working with the children in Apollo class this year and has planned some fun multi skills practise for the first term.

How you can help!

  • PE days are Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school (clearly labelled) and remove any earrings.
  • Homework is due on a Monday. It is the children’s responsibility to make sure that their homework is completed every week and placed into the homework box on a Monday morning in order for it to be marked.
  • Spelling tests are on a Monday morning and the following week’s spellings will be handed out on the same day.

Home Learning

Here are some activities that you can do at home:

  • Keep practising our ‘Harvest Samba’ song

  • This week we have been trying really hard to extend our sentences and make them a little bit longer. Can you practise writing sentences using conjunctions? Conjunctions are words that join sentences together like ‘and’, ‘because’, ‘but’ and ‘so’.
  • Here is a useful website to help practise spellings each week. Spell Zone has a range of games which link to the children’s spelling rule for each week. Why don’t you try the word search or have a go at the bouncing anagrams?
