Although this week has only been four days long, we have been as busy as ever in Apollo Class. We began the week with our Bikeability session, which had perfect weather for us. This helped us to understand all about how to ride a bike and which bikes are best for us. Some of us had been practising over half term which gave us a good head start. We have seen some children starting to ride their bikes to school, which is excellent.

We also kicked off our whole school theme of “Under the Sea” and began the week by looking at a short film with no words, for which we had to use the clues to work out what was happening. We used the ideas from this film to create our own story about an adventure under the sea, in which we focused on setting description and devices for engaging the reader.

In maths we have been problem solving and investigating. We began with the puzzle that Noah saw 12 legs walk past the Ark, what animals could it have been? We focused on reasoning and explaining our answers and proving how we know if we are right or wrong. We developed our learning by as kin “What if?” questions such as what if there were 13 legs? We then moved on to solving under the sea related word problems and problems involving seeking all possibilities such as “If there are 3 flavours of ice cream, what are the different combinations we could have?”

We used pastel techniques to create some under the sea art work and have also contrasted this with the development of a philosophy session based on the text “Catch me if you can.”

We have also further developed our thinking about the Global Learning Goals for our world and discussed the on going plastics problem and how it relates to the Under the Sea theme.

Next week we are really looking forward to our visiting theatre company who will be launching our Great Fire of London Theme.

Also next week we will be looking at the author Anthony Browne. If you have any books at home that you would be happy to lend us, we would be most grateful.
