This week has been yet another fun filled busy one in Apollo!

We have been busy creating some amazing pieces of Art work for our display, which we cannot wait to share with you. We have also been looking at the author Anthony Browne and writing a blurb for encouraging other people to read some of his books. On World Book Day, we looked at some of his illustrations and talked about the clever ways in which he uses them to create mystery in his stories.

Also on World Book Day, we wrote short descriptions of the character we had come as, in order to get other children to guess who we were from reading them.

On Wednesday of this week, we had a visit from Freshwater Theatre Company, who brought our theme of The Great Fire of London to life for us. We were transported back in time to 1666 for the morning and met Samuel Pepys, King Charles the Second and also The Mayor of London. We learnt so much in a short space of time and now are going to use this to help us raise inquiry questions about what we want to find out next and to think about the best way to further our learning.

Maths has been all about duration of time this week. We have been grappling with the idea that one hour is equal to 60 minutes and using our learning about fractions, have looked at how an hour can be split up into quarters to tell the time to the nearest 15 minutes. For many of us this was challenging, so any work you can do at home on telling the time and making calculations about what time it will be in 15 minutes, or other durations of time, would be really helpful.
We look forward to seeing some of you at our work sharing afternoon on Wednesday 13th and also remind you that on that morning, we will be holding a short session in Apollo class at 9a.am to discuss the end of Key Stage 1 assessments in May.

Finally, this week has seen us introducing Reading Lottery Tickets. Some of us in Apollo have show in our reading diaries that we have been reading with an adult at least three times a week which has given us entry into the Easter draw. We know this can be difficult, but the following statistics may surprise you...

If a child reads for 20 minutes a day at home they will hear 1.8 million words a year............

Thank you for your continued co-operation and all that you do as parents to support us in your child’s learning journey.
