This week we have been rehearsing our plays about the Great Fire of London and have performed them to the children in Demeter Class. We used our work on this to write a diary entry, as if we had been at The Great Fire ourselves, and we were really pleased with ourselves for how these turned out.

In maths we have been doing all sorts! We began the week by brushing up on some drawing of accurate lines in CM’s, then recapped on the addition and subtraction of money, missing number puzzles and using what we know to find out what we didn’t know! Finally we looked at placing numbers on a number line when most of the other numbers are missing. What skills do we need to help us with this? We need to have a good understanding of Place Value (Hundreds, Tens and Ones,) to be able to talk about where the number should go. Is it greater than....? or is it less than....? Where do we think it should go and why?

In Science, we have been looking at the vocabulary associated with healthy plants and trying to match the definition to the word. We have also done some research about which plants grow from seeds and looked at the plant cycle of them.

We are still on the lookout for any seeds, plants, containers or compost, to set up and conduct our investigations next term....

Thank you to all those of you who managed to come and look at the amazing artwork this week. We hope you are as proud of the children as we are.

Finally........ We are not giving out as many Reading Lottery Tickets as we would like in Apollo. Please remember to read as much as you can at home. You can do some really fun activities with reading, like drawing what you read to help you visualise it,or imaging you were the main character and talking about why you did the things you did. The possibilities are endless! Developing comprehension of reading in Year 2 is key and although your child may have a really good sight vocabulary of words, it is important that we work together to help them to put meaning to the words on the page. Only then will they be able to develop their enjoyment of reading.

Thank you for your continued support with this.

How you can help!

  • Application of knowledge of number bonds to calculate beyond pairs of numbers to 30

  • Picking out important information in word problems and comprehensions
  • Reading longer texts and looking deeper into key themes and characterisation
  • Making links between books we have read
  • Using inference and deduction and showing an understanding of what we read to answer questions about a text
