This week we have been persevering with trying to find out more about the culprit who broke into our classroom during the holidays. We have been solving 2 step maths problems to help us with this and have been getting better at picking out the important information and doing each step in order. So far, we have worked together to discover that the culprit has RED HAIR!! This makes sense, as we found a lock of red hair on the floor and on one of the tables on our first day back!

This week we have also been focusing on finding the missing number to a calculation by using the inverse. This is quite a tricky concept as you have to use the opposite number operation and make sure that you put the numbers into the correct order to perform the calculation. For example, to calculate 34 + ? = 59 we would use the inverse operation of subtract and make sure that you take the smallest number away from the largest so it would become 59 - 34 = then we can use strategies we know to calculate. Practising this at home would be really helpful!

We have been continuing with planning and writing our own Traditional Tale and have been inventing and describing our own characters and thinking about what could go wrong for them in our story. Next week, we will be linking all our ideas together and thinking about how to resolve the problems and end our story in an interesting way.

In Food Technology, we made Gingerbread men. This helped us to remember about different units we use to measure how heavy things are and how we measure liquids.

In Science, we made observations of the seeds we planted last week and also set up a new investigation to see if plants do really need leaves to grow healthily

How you can help!

  • Application of knowledge of number bonds to calculate beyond pairs of numbers to 30
  • Quick recall division and multiplication facts based on the 2,5,and 10 times tables but also using known facts to calculate unknown ones eg if 2 x 5 = 10 what does 2 x 50 = ?
  • Picking out important information in word problems and comprehensions
  • Reading longer texts and looking deeper into key themes and characterisation
  • Making links between books we have read
  • Using inference and deduction and showing an understanding of what we read to answer questions about a text

Home Learning

  • Daily 10
  • Reading at least 3 x a day
  • Re-telling the events or facts from what you have read
  • Exploring spelling rules for words with suffixes –ing, -ed, -er, -est
