This week the children have enjoyed doing some inquiry research about animal habitats.

We have talked about the different methods of inquiry and ways to answer our questions: reading for information, asking an expert and conducting an experiment or investigation to find an answer. We have also learnt about how to form new questions from what we find out. The children have used their skills in computing to search the internet and have worked hard on processing the information they read to put it into their own words.

We have also used reading research to help us group animals according to what they eat. We all found out something we didn’t know (even the teachers!) for example did you know that a millipede eats both leaves and other insects and is therefore an Omnivore?! We then used this information to help us think about animal food chains. We discussed how plants get their energy from the sun and that herbivores eat the plants, then Carnivores or Omnivores eat the Herbivores. Some of us looked at the scientific vocabulary “Producers” and “Consumers” too to help us understand.

Next week we are beginning to look at habitats and Microhabitats in our school grounds and will be thinking about how we can find out how to make our own bug houses and hotels. We will be writing a letter home asking for some things that we might need such as kitchen roll tubes, straws, bricks, anything with holes in, ceramic pots and any kinds of tubes.

A big thank you to Mrs Dent who took charge of the T-shirt order for the show. We will keep the shirts in school and write your child’s name on for them. A pot will be put in Apollo for the payments you have organised with Mrs Dent.

A reminder that our dress rehearsal is at the Lighthouse Theatre On Wednesday 24th. You will need to collect your children as indicated on the slips you returned.

Finally, a huge thank you for returning the slips and payments for the Lion Learning workshop on 3rd July, with such short notice. The children are really excited about it.

How you can help!

  • Application of knowledge of number bonds to calculate beyond pairs of numbers to 30
  • Quick recall division and multiplication facts based on the 2,5,and 10 times tables but also using known facts to calculate unknown ones eg if 2 x 5 = 10 what does 2 x 50 = ?
  • Picking out important information in word problems and comprehensions
  • Reading longer texts and looking deeper into key themes and characterisation
  • Making links between books we have read
  • Using inference and deduction and showing an understanding of what we read to answer questions about a text

Home Learning

  • Daily 10
  • Reading at least 3 x a day
  • Re-telling the events or facts from what you have read
  • Exploring spelling rules for words with suffixes –ing, -ed, -er, -est
