This week in Maths, we have been looking really closely at what numbers really mean. We have been continuing sequences counting in steps of 2,5 and 10 and working out which numbers are missing. A really important part of maths is to be able to explain how you know an answer is correct, so we have been working on our explaining and reasoning too.

When you look at the value of a number, you need to know and understand where it goes on the number line. To help us with this we made 2-digit numbers using sticks of tens and ones and then worked out how to put them in order from smallest to largest. We also experimented with using the symbol to place two numbers correctly, explaining how we knew that one was more than and one was less than.

We began a new story this week all about Small Knight and his adventures to fight a very fierce dragon. This adventure story helped us to think about a story journey and we used lots of actions and repetitions to help us remember the story. Next week we are going to have a go at planning our own adventure story using Small Knight to help us.

After our parent meeting on Tuesday 24th, we will be giving out spellings and homework. The spellings will mainly be recapping on phonics from Year 1 and will also include Common Exception Words from the list which we need to learn in Year 2. We will send a copy of this list home as the more these words can be practised, the better it is for the children to be able to use them in their writing.

In Science, we have been talking about Human Life Cycles and comparing what humans are able to do at different stages in their lives. When we go on our visit to Elm Bank in October, this will help us to understand a bit more about how we change and slow down as we get older.

Finally, we enjoyed a football tater session on Thursday morning which got us out and about and woke us up nicely!

Please could you make sure that if you order a lunch, the children don’t then bring in a packed lunch too, as we are wasting quite a bit of food because of this, where ordered lunches are going to waste.

Many thanks for your continued support.

How you can help!

Spend some time looking at the Common Exception Words for Year 2. The children will need to know how to read and spell all of these by the end of Year 2.

Practise pairs of numbers which make 10 or 20 if you fancy a challenge. For example 7 + ? = 10.

Talk to your child about the faith of your family and explore their views and opinions about it. Alternatively, you could choose a faith to explore and find out about.

Practise the spelling pattern of the week - maybe even find other words with the pattern which are not on the list
