This week we have been planning, designing, making and evaluating vehicles with moving wheels and a winding mechanism. Poor old Father Christmas has a broken-down sleigh and he needs a vehicle with wheels to help him deliver the presents.

The children looked at fixed and moving axles and made decisions about how they would attach moving wheels to the chassis of their vehicle. We learnt a lot by making mistakes and also learnt how to persevere! We thought carefully about how to decorate the vehicle and then we were presented with a further challenge of using what we had learnt to make a winding mechanism to lift and drop the presents down the chimney. We also learnt about how to strengthen structures by using tape. We had to do a calculation to work out how much dowel we needed to make an axle for our vehicle and we measured the dowel to cut it to the correct size.

Finally, we evaluated our vehicles to see if they had all the things we had planned for and talked about how we could make improvements.

Our Christmas Concert was a big success and we all felt very proud of ourselves. We worked hard as a team and really enjoyed performing to our families and friends.

How you can help!

Telling the time is tricky!! We will be recapping on O'Clock and half past and also looking at quarter past.

we will be using what we know about how many seconds there are in a minute and how many minutes in an hour to solve simple word problems. Anything you can do to reinforce this at home will be helpful.

Talk about any plants we eat and which part of the plant we eat. Is it the leaf, the bulb, the stem or the flowers?
practise 2, 5 and 10 times table facts and corresponding divisions
