This week Apollo have been writing recounts in the character of Mary Seacole. We have really enjoyed using our learning from History to help us understand what it would have been like to travel to the Crimean War. We have developed our use of description and included the feelings of the character as well as using a range of adjectives and expanded noun phrases to describe the setting.

We talked a little about what it must of felt like for Mary Seacole when people were unkind to her because of the colour of her skin and used empathy to try and show an understanding in our writing.

In Maths we have been learning about money and coins. We practiced making amounts of money using different coins and had to solve some problems for how to make the highest and lowest amount or find a way to pay for an item using only silver coins. On Thursday we had a go at solving money word problems, but we soon found that we had forgotten all the work we did last term on how to add and subtract 2-digit numbers using a number line and jumping on or back in tens and ones, so we will need to have another go at that!

In Science we investigated which material would be the best to make an umbrella. We talked about the Science words “waterproof” and “absorbent” and carried out a fair test to see which material kept the water out. We decided that Plastic was the best material as it was waterproof and flexible.

In computing, we learnt how to take a photograph, choosing a subject and making sure the subject was in the centre of the picture. We talked about how to focus a photograph and how to evaluate our work once we had taken a picture.

Hopefully, you have all had a letter about fruit contributions, to help us out with our smoothie making in a few weeks.

If you have read The Apollo Class Blog this week – let us know in the reading diaries. Many Thanks

How you can help!

Telling the time is tricky!! We will be recapping on O'Clock and half past and also looking at quarter past.

we will be using what we know about how many seconds there are in a minute and how many minutes in an hour to solve simple word problems. Anything you can do to reinforce this at home will be helpful.

Talk about any plants we eat and which part of the plant we eat. Is it the leaf, the bulb, the stem or the flowers?
practise 2, 5 and 10 times table facts and corresponding divisions
