This week we have been doing a range of brilliant things in Ares. These are a few of the activities we have been doing.

In English this week we have just went on to the topic of biography, after finishing our old topic writing a diary entry of a boy/girl in a Victorian workhouse. We split the word autobiography into three parts Bio, auto and graph. With those three words we thought of other words that start with those three topics EG; automobile. Edward said “I found it pretty easy because you could find lots for auto and bio.” We also wrote a biography of our partner.

In Maths this week we have been planning a happy holiday for Mrs Perks. She dreamed that she had won the lottery and had £18, 000 and wants to go on holiday. Our job was to make her holiday memorable and stay in her budget. Some people found a bargain for Mrs Perks (she must have been very happy!) we also went onto a new subject; Adding more than four-digit numbers. Navya said “it was a bit tricky but manageable.” Most people are getting better at it and are growing more confident in the subject.

In French this week we have learnt how to spell Albert “it was hard to say the word in a French accent” a quote from Druvi. Our French skills are improving by the minute. We have also learnt 2 French finger rhymes. We also watched a cilp of a French book based on my little princess (in French). We watched some French songs to help with our learning skills! Soon after we made some French posters for younger classes.

In History we have been learning about Victorians. On the first week back to school first we told each other what things the Victorians did. On a different day in the week we made miniature sized Victorian schools. Now we are learning about the workhouse and what jobs they have done. After that we wrote a diary entry as if we were a Victorian child in the workhouse. The jobs for children in the Victorian times was; cotton mill, coal mine carriers, coal mine drawers, bird scarers, scullery maid, coal mine trapper and street children.

As you can see we have had an amazing week in Ares and I hope you have had a good week like us! Looking forward to the next blog!

How you can help!

Year 5 will be given weekly homework that is set on a Friday and handed back in for marking by the following Thursday. This consists of an English or topic task and a Maths task based on the learning in class that week. The children will also be given weekly spellings to learn, which will be tested on a Friday.

Home Learning

Please continue to support your child by encouraging them to read widely and frequently. They should also be discussing their reading with an adult on a regular basis.

Ensuring that your child is fluent with their multiplication tables is also incredibly beneficial for them. There are lots of ways that these facts can be practiced; chanting, singing, games, apps, web sites or simply writing them out.
