Welcome to Ares

My name is Mrs. Perks and I will be teaching Year 5, covering Mrs. Green’s maternity leave. In Ares we will continue to develop our collaborative learning skills, where our class will be encouraged to apply the values of Respect, Responsibility and Reflection in all we do.

Our Learning Updates

This half term we will be learning about "The World of Oliver Twist” discovering what life was like in Victorian times, focussing on how children were treated then and making comparisons with childhood today. As part of our theme we will be visiting the award winning “Black Country Living Museum” which will allow the children to be fully immersed in the story of the world's first industrial landscape with buildings, vehicles, objects and costumed characters for them to interact with and explore.

In art, we will be studying the work of William Morris and creating our own wallpaper design. Our music curriculum will focus on learning the songs from the musical “Oliver Twist and we will use our ICT skills to research and create PowerPoints about key Victorian inventions that have shaped the way we live today.

The English curriculum this term will focus on Charles Dickens “Oliver Twist”. We will be writing diary entries about the workhouses, compiling a biography about Charles Dicken’s life and creating leaflets about key Victorian Inventions. Alongside this we will be improving our Grammar and Spelling skills with daily Key skills lessons. Maths will be centred around knowledge of number this term, extending our understanding of formal methods of calculation, through problem solving. In Science we will be learning about the Human Body, including digestion, the circulatory system and healthy eating.

Our PE sessions will be on Thursday and Friday, but PE kit may also be needed on other days so please keep it at school.

For the past few weeks in English, we have been focusing on non-chronological reports. This week, we were looking at different non-chronological reports and trying to find their features. These include: title, sub-headings, introductory paragraph, summary, standard English, diagrams, labels, captions, technical vocabulary, facts, and punctuation for parenthesis.

In Maths, we have been looking at equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. We have worked really hard on the percentage part. At the start of the week we did percentages represent on a hundred ,fifty and twenty grid. Then we went towards the converting and equivalent side. Here are some quotes from the class.

“ I found the percentages fun and challenging” said Finn

In history this week we have been working on the wars of the roses . We have been making timelines and drawing the main characters such as, Richard Neville the earl of Warwick, King Henry, Richard Duke of York and Edward the 4th . We have all found this topic very enjoyable.

How you can help!

Year 5 will be given weekly homework that is set on a Friday and handed back in for marking by the following Thursday. This consists of an English or topic task and a Maths task based on the learning in class that week. The children will also be given weekly spellings to learn, which will be tested on a Friday.

Home Learning

Please continue to support your child by encouraging them to read widely and frequently. They should also be discussing their reading with an adult on a regular basis.

Ensuring that your child is fluent with their multiplication tables is also incredibly beneficial for them. There are lots of ways that these facts can be practiced; chanting, singing, games, apps, web sites or simply writing them out.
