We have started this week by introducing our learning theme ‘Up, up and away’. We all enjoyed watching the film ‘Up’ as a hook to engage the children. They then went and discovered some balloons tied to the playhouses outside (like the film). This was to start our DT project which the children are very excited about. We don’t want to give too much away in case the children haven’t told you what we are making.

Maths this week has focused on adding by counting on. The children have used the words ‘first’, ‘then’ and ‘now’ when faced with some number problems. They have explored different ways to solve addition number equations.

In history and literacy we have been learning about Neil Armstrong and his journey to become an astronaut and to be the first man on the moon. We used timelines and listened to information read to us. Today the children wrote sentences about what they have learnt.

With Mr Palmer the children began to learn a dance all about their journey to the moon.

Please could you ensure your child has a clear water bottle to bring into class so they can access a drink during the day.
Mrs Greasley will be changing our library books on Tuesday 22nd January – please make sure your child has their book available to change on that day. We will remind you again next week.

A reminder that girls will need to have spare pair of socks in their PE bags for when they are wearing tights on PE days.

Before Christmas the children were sent home with two free choice reading books. One at their current level and one at the next level. Please could you make sure you give us feedback in the homelink diaries on this. Their free choice this week is at the higher level but we would appreciate your feedback. We had a lot of comments to say children hadn’t read them and we can’t stress enough the importance of frequent reading at home. Please make sure you are logging and commenting on this in the diaries.

Phonics Hero: We are very excited to announce that all children in Demeter have been given a log in for this fantastic website. It allows the children to plays games whilst following the letters and sounds phonics program. We have played some games in class and they really enjoyed it. A few members of Demeter were used to trial this and we had some lovely feedback. When you log in the children will be asked to undertake an assessment. This then places them where the assessment feels they should start from. The games are sequential within the levels and we can set it so they can’t go beyond what we are learning in class. There is a reporting element for us but I believe parents can also access similar information via the children’s accounts. The children will be given opportunities to use this at school also. It is a learning curve for us also so bear with us and if we can answer your questions please come and see us. The children will have the letters tomorrow (Friday).

Show and tell continues to be about books and reading. We have had a lovely selection this week, it looks like Father Christmas gifted a lot of books to children when he came in December.
