Welcome to Demeter

Welcome to Demeter

In Demeter we create an atmosphere of independence and encourage the children to take responsibility for their learning, in preparation for the rest of their school journey. Miss Gilbert will be the class teacher. Mrs Hay provides learning support throughout the whole week.

Our Learning Updates

Spring term introduces the theme ‘Food Fabulous Food’.

The children will be reading and learning from the fantastic book, ‘I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato’. Will they be able to help Charlie to persuade Lola to eat her food? This will require the children to use lots of adjectives and persuasive language.

In PSHE and Science they will learn all about healthy minds and healthy bodies. Geography will focus on foods from around the world and different cultures and customs linked to food.

In Food Technology the children will learn to make a fruit salad fit for a Very Hungry Caterpillar and design a healthy pizza (with a fabulous surprise trip for the children to also enjoy!)

The food theme continues with the study of Giuseppe Arcimboldo and the creation of some food faces artwork.

It makes me hungry just thinking about it all!

Our blog this week is a bit of an update from the previous two weeks. As you will know from information around the school, we are having some technical issues.

We had our exciting visit from James Dasaolu, and some children had their photos taken with him, some got signed photos, everyone got a sticker, for their fantastic sponsorship contributions. Well done!

Last Friday was our combined Children in Need and Anti Bullying day. It was so lovely to see all the children dressed in their Pudsey clothes, ears and odd socks. See our class photo for the lovely array of odd socks in Demeter. Thank you so much for all your generous donations to such a worthy cause.

Our work with Bob Robber has continued. The children produced some wanted posters that Mr Blight came to look at. We have drawn a picture of our favourite part of the story. We have acted out being Jane and Bob. Can the children tell you the story?

In maths we have worked hard with our cherry models, and trying to use them to turn them into number sentences using the models accurately.

Mr C surprised us on Friday by announcing Demeter class were the first recipients of Premier Sports ‘Class of the week’. All of us were very proud of the children as it was a true team effort. The trophy has been displayed in our curiosity cube this week.

We have been perfecting our sentence work in our Grammar lessons. Some of us are even adding in amazing alliteration!

Lots of reading to be seen in the home link diaries…….daily would be fantastic. It has been really noticeable that some of the children have improved their fluency and that is exactly what we are looking for. Thank you to those parents who have increased their weekly reads. It does help.

On Monday we would like the children to bring in a toy from home to aid us in our history topic of toys. Obviously we would stress a sensible size please and labelled if necessary.

Please check all clothing is clearly named including outerwear. We have had some clothing where the name is not recognisable.
