The children in Iris Class have had another fantastic week. Their learning behaviours are becoming more positive and they have been enjoying tasks and activities both in the classroom and in the outside learning area. The children have been utilising the Water Wall and the Mud Kitchen independently and their engagement levels have been increasing. Great work everyone.

We have been learning some new letter sounds and we have been introduced to the word 'digraph' which means two letters together that make one sound e.g. ck makes just one sound when it is in a word. We have been using another new word in Maths where this week we have been describing 2D shapes. The word is 'vertices' which means corners.

On Mondays we have been reciting our home learning poem altogether. The importance of learning about rhythm and rhyme can not be underestimated. It really helps the children at the beginning of the learning to read process to understand these two powerful concepts. It also helps to build self-esteem and develop self-confidence.

We have also been able to use the Trim Trail this week which has been fantastic. The children have enjoyed using their gross motor skills to move along the obstacles as well as taking risks and helping each other.

The dates for the up-coming Iris Class workshops are as follows:-

  • Reading- Friday 13th October 2.30-3.25
  • Mathematics- Friday 20th October 2.30-3.25

Please come to the main entrance and someone will show you where to go. Hope to see lots of you there.

Home Learning

Once the Induction Period has been completed and the children are in full time attendance they will each receive a booklet of home learning tasks and activities for them to complete on a weekly basis. The most important of which is to read to, and with, your child every day. In addition to this there is a poem to learn to say, sounds and words to recognise and read and a mathematical activity to complete. After Christmas, as the children become developmentally ready, they will each have a small number of words to learn to spell each week.

How you can help!

These websites will help your child to practise skills that they have been learning at school.
