In Maths we have been learning about estimating. We had to say how many objects we could see or we were holding simply by having a guess. A tricky concept for some as the children always want to get it 'right' but we have talked about it just being a close guess. We will then be estimating with other mathematical concepts such as length, weight and capacity. Our lead text has been 'Fix It Duck' this week. The children have really enjoyed seeing how Fix It Duck tries to make things better but really doesn't. Then we had a letter from Mrs Farmer asking for help from Iris Class to create something that would help keep her animals in their fields as they kept escaping. The children came up with some really imaginative and creative ideas which led us into thinking about materials and which material would be best to keep the animals in. The children should all now have their Home Learning booklet for this term plus some children will have a Spelling Home Learning booklet as well. Be as creative as you like with the spelling practise e.g. bath crayons, writing in flour, gloop, paint brushes and water, whatever works best for you.

Key dates for this term for Iris Class:-

  • Wednesday 17th January 9am-Come and Read workshop. This will be slightly different to the whole school reading sessions where parents and carers will have the opportunity to observe some teaching and also have the opportunity to try out some of the methods and resources with their child.
  • Wednesday 31st January 2.45 pm-Come and Write workshop
  • Friday 2nd March 9am-Come and Write workshop
  • Wednesday 14th March-Come and Play with Shape and Number

Home Learning

Once the Induction Period has been completed and the children are in full time attendance they will each receive a booklet of home learning tasks and activities for them to complete on a weekly basis. The most important of which is to read to, and with, your child every day. In addition to this there is a poem to learn to say, sounds and words to recognise and read and a mathematical activity to complete. After Christmas, as the children become developmentally ready, they will each have a small number of words to learn to spell each week.

How you can help!

These websites will help your child to practise skills that they have been learning at school.
