We have been learning all about Chinese New Year this week including finding out about the customs and celebrations that people who celebrate Chinese New Year might participate in. We had a Chinese Restaurant role play area in the classroom where the children had some real Chinese food to play with, chopsticks, menus and other food related resources. The children made Chinese lanterns, consolidating their scissor skills and then decorating with glitter as well as creating their own Chinese dragon using a variety of shapes. Some children chose to make Chinese hats and Chinese fans, decorating them and attaching string to the hats. Outside they made dancing dragons as well as an enormous temple. The children used vocabulary to recall the story of Chinese New Year and had a race like the animals in the story thinking about the ordinal language and vocabulary relating to order, e.g. first, second. We watched a Chinese dragon dance and fed our own Chinese dragon words and sentences that we had written. All in all it's been another week full of learning and fun.

A reminder that on Thursday you are invited into school at 3pm to share a book with your child. I hope to see lots of you there. Thank you.

Home Learning

At the beginning of each new term the children will receive a booklet of home learning tasks and activities for them to complete and work on each week. The most important part of home learning is to talk with your child, read to, and with your child, every day and record this in their School Planners and allow them to think for themselves and develop their independence skills. After Christmas, as the children become developmentally ready, they will each have a small number of simple words to learn to spell each week.

How you can help!

Help to develop questioning skills and encouraging the children to record their own independent learning would really help the children.
