Thinking all about ourselves has been the theme running through this week. The children have been looking really carefully at their faces in order to create their own self-portraits using paint. They had to decide on the colour of their skin, the colour of their hair and eyes and also the colour of their lips in order to create a life-like self-portrait. I wonder if you will be able to guess who they are?

In PE, the children have thinking about how to balance. They have been using a range of resources to help them improve their balance as well as thinking about how they place their feet and how they land safely. The children have really improved their dressing and undressing for PE as well as their listening skills throughout the sessions.

We have continued to blend sounds together in order to make a word. We have been doing this mainly verbally but some children have moved on to blending using the graphemes, the written form of the letter sound. This is a really important skill that the children need to master in order to help them with their reading so any extra rehearsing at home or out and about will really help.
e.g. t-o-p = top

In maths, we have been looking at the 'twoness of two.' What makes 2 special? We have been using tens frames to move two counters around just checking that it is still two. The children have also been introduced to the concept of, 'subitizing.' It means to know how many are in a set without actually counting them. e.g. dots on a dice or dots on a domino or even quantities of fingers. The children love the 'Subitizing Song' that we have been using. We have also been singing lots of songs all about ourselves.

Home Learning

At the beginning of each new term the children will receive a booklet of home learning tasks and activities for them to complete and work on each week. The most important part of home learning is to talk with your child, read to, and with your child, every day and record this in their School Planners and allow them to think for themselves and develop their independence skills. After Christmas, as the children become developmentally ready, they will each have a small number of simple words to learn to spell each week.

How you can help!

Help to develop questioning skills and encouraging the children to record their own independent learning would really help the children.
