Wow – Look at all of the wonderful writing and art work the children have created in Iris class. Over the past couple of weeks we have been painting different characters from our ‘Super Duck’ stories. The children have been selecting the appropriate resources, using paintbrush tools effectively and choosing particular colours for their work.

Mrs Donald and Mrs Coles have been particularly impressed with how much the children’s writing skills have progressed this term. The children are trying really hard to hear and say the initial sound in words and then link sounds to letters. They are beginning to form clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning and some children are writing their own sentences using finger spaces and full stops.

We hope you got the letter about ‘World Book Day’ this year. It is on Thursday 5th March. All day, our learning will be focused around the text ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort. We would really like it if the children could come in dressed as someone or something based around this theme.

Thank you to all of the parents who are reading with their children at home and recording this reading in the school link diaries. Reading is the key to everything and at school we try to promote a real love for it within the classroom.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr Seuss

Please remember to read with your child for 5-10 minutes every day. By now, all children are bringing home books with words in. Encourage your child to turn the pages themselves, segment the sounds in each word and blend them together to read.

As a school, we like to promote positive behaviour and one of the ways we do this is through the use of dojos. Dojos can be given by any adult in school and are given for things like; concentrating well, making links in their learning, being independent, thinking of their own ideas, producing a good piece of work or anything else that stands out. Once the children achieve 50 dojos, they earn a bronze badge which is given to them in class and they can wear it proudly on their uniform. 100 dojos earns a silver badge, 150 dojos earns a gold badge and 200 dojos earn a platinum badge. This week, some of the children in Iris class are beginning to earn their bronze badges. Keep working hard and it won’t be long before you earn yours!

Home Learning

At the beginning of each new term the children will receive a booklet of home learning tasks and activities for them to complete and work on each week. The most important part of home learning is to talk with your child, read to, and with your child, every day and record this in their School Planners and allow them to think for themselves and develop their independence skills. After Christmas, as the children become developmentally ready, they will each have a small number of simple words to learn to spell each week.

How you can help!

Help to develop questioning skills and encouraging the children to record their own independent learning would really help the children.
