This week we have been petrologists, they are people who study rocks, we tested different rocks and followed a sorting key to work out which type of rock it was.

Marlo said, “We had to look really carefully using a microscope and then try to figure out what type of rock it was.” 

Oliver S said “ If you put vinegar on the rock and it fizzed then that meant it had small parts of animal shells in it. My rock fizzed; I had a piece of pumice.” 

We also made a model of the Earth and how it is made up. There are 4 layers, inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. This helped us to understand where rocks come from and how mountains are made. 

We have been finding out about different ways of presenting data and how to interpret and answer questions about data. We know how to use pictograms, Venn diagrams and Carroll diagrams. We enjoyed using practical resources to sort out information and got to work with a different partner. 

We began to learn a song this week and have continued to improve our techniques and trying to play altogether. This has tested our listening skills but we are making progress! 

Joel said “ I enjoyed learning a song to play on the recorder. We know where to put our fingers; we have to make a ‘tu’ sound when we blow into the recorder.” 

We finished the week by looking at a a famous piece of art work by Salvador Dali. We discussed the picture and what it made us think about and how it made us feel. We than used the picture as a P4C stimulus and it gave us lots of juicy questions to discuss. 

Maisie “ We all sat in a circle and asked questions about the picture. It had lots of clocks on it so we talked about time and memories.” 

Mishal said “ I enjoyed learning about the artist, we asked P4C questions which need to be ‘juicy’, this means there should be lots for us to think about.”

How you can help!

Year 3 are given weekly homework that is set on a Wednesday and handed back in for marking on a Monday. This consists of an English activity and a Maths activity. The children are also given weekly spellings to learn which are tested on a Thursday. Throughout the year the type of work that they will be set will varying with each half term having a slightly different focus. MyMaths will be used at different points throughout the year as the set homework but is available all year round for extra practice. Please continue to practise your times tables as we are now using the Times Table Marathon to track which times tables the children know, ask your child about this. We are enjoying the challenge and it is helping us to make progress with our multiplication knowledge..
