This week the whole school have been celebrating 'Under the Sea' theme. The school has been decorated with an awe of colour and sea creatures to capture and engage the children's attention with a view to creating some WOW work and in year 3 we have had a fantastic experience.

To start the week off we grouped different sea creatures in the morning and in the afternoon we used IPADs and resources to research a chosen sea creature to find facts about its: texture, colour, habits etc... We also recycled plastic bottles to create different layers of the sea by putting sand, water, oil and food colouring in.

The following day we used the previous days information to generate ideas and adjectives to create an acrostic poem. Their challenge was to create a descriptive poem about their sea creature using alliteration, interesting words and similes.

Thursday we looked closer at a shape poem 'waves' and investigated its purpose and features. The children then did some independent writing on Friday by recreating this poem about waves using their own chosen language in a shape of a wave. They are beautiful!

Friday afternoon we looked at science and food chains of some of the sea creatures then performed a soundscape of the sea using our hands, vocal chords and fingers.

Throughout the week we have started looking at fractions. We began by recognising different fractions using loop cards and have progressed on to unit fractions of objects and non unit fractions. We now know what a numerator is and a denominator is.

Looking forward to next week and WW2!

Year 3 are given weekly homework that is set on a Wednesday and handed back in for marking on a Monday. This consists of an English activity and a Maths activity. The children are also given weekly spellings to learn which are tested on a Thursday. Throughout the year the type of work that they will be set will varying with each half term having a slightly different focus. MyMaths will be used at different points throughout the year as the set homework but is available all year round for extra practice. Please continue to practise your times tables as we are now using the Times Table Marathon to track which times tables the children know, ask your child about this. We are enjoying the challenge and it is helping us to make progress with our multiplication knowledge.
