Welcome to Poseidon

poseidonWelcome to year 3! A little bit of a change this year, Miss Bell now over sees the class as Mrs Spencer has moved on and Mrs Townsend has had her baby boy.

Homework and spellings will both be sent out on a Friday. Homework should be handed in by the following Thursday to be marked and handed back with new homework.

This Term...

This term we are learning all about the Romans! This will form the basis for lots of our literacy writing, our curriculum lessons and art/D and T this term.

We will be looking at lots of famous Roman emperors and learning about the lives of other Roman legends. Added to this, we will be looking at volcanoes with particular focus on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Learning Updates

What a wonderful week to end the half term!

Despite having to complete autumn assessments, we have had a great final week.

All of the children worked really hard with their assessments and really tried their best.

Most afternoons this past week we have spent looking at the Rugby World Cup. With England into the final, it was a great chance for the children to learn more about rugby and get into the spirit of the world cup. As part of this the children worked in groups on a rugby project. These projects formed the basis for most afternoon work and the children thoroughly enjoyed completing them!

Each group was given a question to investigate such as 'Does the length of your arm effect how far you can throw?'. We then set about carrying out our investigations, measuring, throwing a rugby ball, kicking a rugby ball etc. Each group then created a poster including their results and had the chance to research players or the history of rugby and include it on their poster. All groups then presented their work to the rest of the class and Mr Palmer stopped by as a keen rugby player to have a look at the work produced.

The outcome was excellent and all of the children had a great time producing their work!

We also set up a height chart in our classroom and compared our heights to the height of England player Courtney Lawes who is 6ft7!

Everyone is definitely due a well deserved break over half term!

This weeks blog: Wonderful Week!
We started the week with some science! We have been learning all about forces and magnets and this week looked at different things in the classroom and around school to work out if they were magnetic. We made predictions before we tested them using magnets. Eva said; "We found out that the rope on the trim trail wasn't actually rope and it turned out to be magnetic'. The whole class really enjoying finding things that were magnetic.

In PE this week we have continued with tag rugby. There is a tag rugby tournament soon so we all wanted to practice our skills. Ava said; "I really liked PE this week because we did tag rugby and got to practice."

Our English focus this week has been a balanced argument. We have been incorporating the Romans into this looking at reasons why the Romans wanted to invade and creating reasons why they perhaps should not of invaded! Nate said; "We have looked at for and against arguments and have had lots of debates in class and everyone has come up with great reasons for their side of the argument."

Everyone had another great week and we continue to learn lots. In maths the children have shown really great resilience whilst tackling challenging addition questions.

This week's blog was written with the help of Nate, Eva and Ava.

How you can help!

Practising spellings with your child for a short time regularly is the best way to help them learn. Reading at home with your children regularly is also a great help to their learning. Children have an independent reading book that they take home with them and this can be changed within the classroom once they have finished reading it. Each child then works within a group to read a more difficult book, guided by an adult. This is a guided session so we talk through the book in lots of detail.
