Welcome to Athena Class!

Our Athena class is buzzing with curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning. This year, we’ll dive into exciting adventures through reading, writing, maths, and fascinating topics that will take us from our local history to the depths of the rainforest!

Reading

In Athena, we’re growing our VIPERS skills (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval, and Summarising) as we explore a wide variety of texts. From the magical world of Harry Potter and the mischievous adventures of Loki to the breathtaking journey through the Amazon in Journey to the River Sea, our reading takes us on thrilling adventures.

We’ll also dive into classical poetry, discovering the rhythm and beauty of language. In non-fiction, we’ll explore biographies, including the inspiring story of Anne Frank, historic diary entries, explanation texts, and even newspaper reports. Reading in Athena is all about developing our love for books while sharpening our comprehension skills!

Writing

Our writing skills will soar this year as we work on fronted adverbials, speech punctuation, and using a wider range of conjunctions to make our writing shine.

We’ll tackle a variety of genres, including:

• Newspaper Reports based on the magical adventures in Wizards of Once.
• Persuasive Brochures for imaginary and real destinations.
• Creative Narratives set in lush rainforests or sparkling winter wonderlands.
• Explanation Texts about how the human body works.
• Persuasive Adverts to encourage sustainable living and caring for our planet.

Every piece of writing will help us express our ideas clearly and creatively!

Maths

In maths, we’ll cover the full Athena curriculum with plenty of hands-on activities and problem-solving challenges. From multiplication and division to fractions and decimals, we’ll build a strong foundation in number skills. We’ll also explore geometry, statistics, and measurements to deepen our understanding of the world around us.

Topics

Our topic lessons are packed with discovery and exploration! This year, we’ll be learning about:

• Local History: Unearthing stories and events that shaped our community.
• The Ancient Maya: Exploring the fascinating lives of the Maya people.
