Reception - Iris Class

Welcome to Iris Class!

In our Reception class, we create an exciting, nurturing environment where young learners can grow and thrive. This year marks the beginning of each child's educational journey, and we focus on making learning fun, engaging, and meaningful. Through a blend of structured activities and play, children develop essential skills in literacy, numeracy, and social interactions.

What we learn in Iris Class

Throughout the year in Iris class, children embark on an exciting learning adventure, building a strong foundation in key areas. We focus on early literacy skills, such as letter recognition, phonics, and simple reading and writing activities, helping children begin to develop their reading skills. In numeracy, children explore numbers, shapes, and simple addition and subtraction through hands-on activities. Our learning also includes creative arts, where children express themselves through drawing, painting, and music. As they develop social skills, children work on cooperation, sharing, and making friendships, while also building emotional resilience and confidence. We encourage curiosity and exploration, offering learning experiences in the classroom, outdoors, and through interactive play. Every child’s progress is supported individually, ensuring a year full of growth, discovery, and fun.

Celebrations in Iris class are a wonderful way to foster a sense of joy, community, and cultural awareness. Throughout the year, we celebrate a variety of special occasions, both big and small, that reflect different traditions, holidays, and milestones. Whether it's celebrating birthdays, seasonal events like Christmas or Easter, or cultural festivals such as Diwali or Chinese New Year, these moments provide opportunities for children to learn about diversity, share their own traditions, and develop respect for others. We also celebrate achievements, whether academic, personal, or social, helping children feel proud of their growth and encouraging a positive sense of accomplishment. These celebrations are always fun, interactive, and meaningful, creating lasting memories and reinforcing important values such as kindness, respect, and teamwork.

In Iris, cross-curricular learning is a key part of our approach, allowing children to connect skills and knowledge across a variety of subjects. By blending literacy, numeracy, science, art, and more, we create rich, interactive learning experiences that are both meaningful and engaging. For example, while learning about animals, children might read stories about wildlife (literacy), count and sort animals (maths), observe animals in the environment (science), and create artwork inspired by the animals they’ve learned about (art).

Trips

Trips are an exciting and enriching part of the Iris class experience, offering children the opportunity to explore the world beyond the classroom. These outings are carefully planned to support and enhance the topics we are learning about, providing real-life experiences that make learning come to life. Whether it's a visit to a local park to observe nature, a trip to a farm to meet animals, or a journey to our forest on ‘Welly Wednesdays’, trips help children develop curiosity and broaden their understanding of the world.
