Year 6 - Zeus

Welcome to Year 6.

Year 6 is an exciting and important year as pupils prepare for the transition to secondary school. We are dedicated in supporting pupils to reach their full potential, both academically and personally, while making the most of their final year at Hall Meadow..

Curriculum Highlights

In Year 6, pupils will focus on key subjects, including:

  • English: Developing advanced reading comprehension and creative writing skills.
  • Mathematics: Exploring complex concepts such as algebra, geometry, and data handling.
  • Science: Hands-on experiments and investigations into topics like electricity and evolution.
  • History/Geography: Learning about topics such as World War II and trade links.
  • Art, Music, and Design Technology: Opportunities to express creativity through exciting projects.
  • PE: Activities to build teamwork and fitness.
  • PSHE: Preparing for secondary school and personal development.

Special focus will also be given to preparing for the end of Key Stage 2 standardised assessments (also known as SATs).

Key Events and Activities

Year 6 pupils have many opportunities to shine and make memories, including:

  • Residential trip to Govilon (Wales)
  • Day trips to the National Justice Museum and Hope Centre
  • Visitors in class (police)
  • Sports Day and inter-school competitions
  • Swimming lessons
  • Play Leaders
  • Special leavers’ assembly and celebrations
  • Leavers' trip to Wicksteed Park
  • The most exciting: sitting on a bench in assembly!

Homework and Expectations

Year 6 pupils are encouraged to develop independence and responsibility. Weekly homework will include:

  • English task: either writing/ SPaG or reading comprehension
  • Maths task
  • Spelling on Spelling Shed
  • Timestable Rockstars
  • Reading 

Preparing for Secondary School

We work closely with the children, families and secondary schools to ensure a smooth transition to secondary school. Activities include:

  • Additional visits to secondary schools (where needed)
  • Workshops on organisation and study skills.
  • Guidance on managing change and expectations.

Parent Support

We value parental involvement in supporting learning. Parents can help by:

  • Encouraging regular reading at home.
  • Discussing topics learnt in school.
  • Supporting homework routines
